Home-Made Broth for Dog Food

How to Make Homemade Broth for Your Dog’s Food Many dog food recipes do not include broth as a necessary ingredient. You don't   have  to make homemade broth for your dog food, but I personally found that if I wanted Dezzzzi to eat the rice and vegetables portion of the food, I needed to do everything in my power to make them as delectable as possible.  Once I started cooking them in homemade broth, she started cleaning her plate. Before, she would either pick out the vegetables or rice as best as she could, or she would only eat half of the meal and leave the rest (hoping I would add something special to convince her to eat the rest). While I am definitely not stingy with treats and toppings, I didn't feel good about her eating food that had been sitting out all day.  It was my experimentation with different ways of cooking her food to get her to eat all of it (cause the nutrients!) that let me to making broth at home and using it to add more flavor....

What I Learned from My Bloodhound

Life Lessons I Learned from My Bloodhound: Wisdom from a Droopy-Eared Companion

I had no idea bloodhounds are such remarkable dogs. I know they are known for their incredible noses and droopy skin, but books don't mention how goofy and easy-going they are. My own sweet hound's sweet nature is what helped me get through the road bumps life threw my way - like cancer and infertility. Living with a bloodhound has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, not just because of the companionship but also because of the lessons this lovable hound has taught me. All the time I spent in waiting rooms and recovering at home helped me reflect on the lessons my sweet girl taught me without me even realizing it.

Here are some of the most important life lessons I’ve learned from my Dezzzzi:

1. Patience Pays Off

One of the most defining characteristics of a bloodhound is their patience when following a scent. They won’t give up until they’ve traced that scent to its source, no matter how long it takes or how winding the trail might be. Watching Dezzzzi work has reminded me that patience is essential in life.

Whether it’s working on a long-term project, navigating a difficult situation, or simply waiting for the right moment, Dezzzzi has shown me that patience is the key to success. It’s easy to feel impatient in today’s fast-paced world, but my hound’s unhurried, methodical nature reminds me to stay calm and trust the process.

2. Trust Your Instincts

Bloodhounds are known for their strong instincts, especially when it comes to following their noses. They can pick up even the faintest scent and follow it without hesitation. This has taught me the importance of trusting my own instincts.

In life, we often second-guess ourselves or look to others for validation. But Dezzzzi, with her unwavering confidence in her nose, has shown me that following your gut can lead you in the right direction. It is easier said than done, I know - but I've hidden treats around the house and watched Dezzzzi completely miss one several times, only to find it eventually. Trusting your instincts (and in her case, nose) doesn't mean being perfect.

3. Take Time to Explore

If you’ve ever spent time with a bloodhound, you know they love to explore. A simple walk can turn into a grand adventure as they sniff every leaf, flower, and patch of grass along the way. They don’t rush; they savor every moment.

From my bloodhound, I’ve learned the value of slowing down and exploring the world around me. It’s easy to get caught up in routines, deadlines, and responsibilities, but taking time to pause, observe, and appreciate the small things in life can bring a sense of joy and fulfillment. Dezzzzi reminds me daily that the journey is just as important as the destination.

4. Don’t Take Life Too Seriously

Despite their serious appearance and reputation as tracking dogs, bloodhounds are some of the goofiest, most playful dogs you’ll ever meet. Dezzzzi's clumsy antics and silly behavior have brought countless smiles and laughs into my life.

She's taught me that it’s okay to let loose and be a little goofy sometimes. Life doesn’t always have to be so serious, and finding joy in the everyday, even in the form of a playful romp or a silly expression, can lighten the mood and bring a sense of fun to even the most ordinary day.

5. Stay Loyal and Love Fiercely

Bloodhounds are incredibly loyal dogs. They form strong bonds with their families and show affection in their own quiet, gentle way. Dezzzzi is always there, whether I’m having a great day or recovering from chemotherapy or surgery. Her constant presence and unwavering loyalty have been a reminder of the importance of sticking by the people you care about.

Her love is simple but powerful—she doesn’t need grand gestures or constant attention to know that we’re connected. She's shown me that loyalty and love are often about being there for each other in the moments that matter, whether they’re big or small.

6. Persistence is Key

Bloodhounds are famously persistent. When they catch a scent, they won’t stop until they’ve followed it to the end. This determination and focus are inspiring. Dezzzzi has taught me that persistence is essential when pursuing something important—whether it’s a personal goal, a career aspiration, or simply overcoming a challenge.

There have been times in my life when I’ve felt like giving up, but seeing the determination in Dezzzzi has reminded me to keep going. No matter how difficult the path may be, staying focused and committed can lead to rewarding outcomes.

7. Embrace Rest and Relaxation

For all their energy and dedication to tracking, Bloodhounds also know how to relax. After a long day of sniffing and exploring, Dezzzzi is a master at finding the perfect spot to nap. She has no guilt about taking time to rest and recharge.

From her, I’ve learned the importance of balance. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, but Dezzzzi's ability to fully embrace rest reminds me that relaxation is not only okay but necessary. Taking time for yourself, whether it’s a nap, a break, or simply unwinding after a long day, is essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being.

8. Communication Comes in Many Forms

Bloodhounds may not be as vocal or as expressive as some other breeds, but they have their own ways of communicating. Whether it’s a gentle nudge, a soulful look, or simply curling up beside me, Dezzzzi always finds a way to let me know what she’s feeling. She’s taught me that communication doesn’t always need to be loud or overt.

In life, we often rely on words to express ourselves, but sometimes actions, gestures, and presence can speak just as loudly. Dezzzzi's quiet but powerful ways of communicating have made me more attuned to non-verbal signals, not just from him but from the people around me as well.

Final Thoughts

Living with a Bloodhound has been more than just having a loyal companion by my side—it’s been a journey of learning and personal growth. From patience and persistence to embracing relaxation and trusting my instincts, Dezzzzi has taught me life lessons that have enriched my daily experiences.

Sometimes, the best teachers in life don’t speak at all. They simply show us, through their actions, how to live fully, stay loyal, and enjoy the ride—one sniff, one step, and one nap at a time.
